With the recent switch from Daylight Saving Time, it’s now getting darker much earlier – just as the holiday season ramps up. These darker evenings bring unique safety considerations, whether you’re out shopping, attending gatherings, or simply commuting home. Here's a practical safety tips to help you stay safe and confident during this busy time of year:
Put the phone away!
Who doesn't love looking at their phone all day? But keeping your eyes glued to your screen is the surest way to miss a threat to your safety. That could be a person attacking you, but it can also be something "mundane," like a big crack in the sidewalk that makes you fall and break something. Self-Defense literally means, "protecting yourself," and that includes from the environment, and even from ourselves!
I know many people have headphones in to indicate they don't want to be approached or talked to. Totally makes sense! Consider that when you're in a busy or chaotic environment - crossing a busy intersection at night, for example - you're dampening one of your most useful senses. So please keep the headphones in, but turn down the volume for a few minutes when you really need to be aware 👀
So keep the phone in your pocket or purse, those messages can wait a few minutes. Focus on getting where you need to get safely, and then TikTok will be happy to see you again! 😂
Warm wishes,
