Anyone in the self-defense/fighting/combat sports/martial arts world loves to talk about a “real” fight, usually as a way to denigrate what other people are doing. Yet the concept of a “real” fight is so broad it almost defies definition. Consider which of the below scenarios is more like a “real” fight to you:

  • Two highly trained fighters trying to knock each other out after months of preparation, in a controlled environment, with rules, referees, and doctors.

  • Two unskilled drunks pushing each other at a bar

  • A husband hitting his wife

  • A criminal robbing someone at gunpoint, without physically harming them

We could come up with a dozen more examples, each as distinct. For most of us, we have an idea of what a Real Fight is, and our training, mindset, and egos revolve around that concept. But the truth is, a Real Fight isn’t one thing. It’s a spectrum of aggression and violence. That’s why in Krav Maga we don’t train to fight against every possible scenario. We prepare ourselves to take action in every possible scenario. We do that through the vigorous application of a small number of battle-tested principles, training under stress, and relentless focus on mindset and fighting spirit.
