Krav Maga is designed to be easy to learn, easy to implement, and easy to maintain. We know that people don’t have a lot of time to devote to training. You have lives, families, hobbies, and jobs. Although you could build your life around Krav Maga, it’s really designed for people that can’t. We can often feel that how much we train is reflective of our character. “I only train once a week, I’m a bad person.” Or, “If I train more, it means I’m a better person.” Let’s get rid of that notion right now, so that we can make good decisions about what actually works. Sure, in general the more you train, the faster you’ll progress. But there are real diminishing returns, and everything comes with a trade off. I will give you some actual recommendations, but the most important thing to remember is that doing ANY training - even once a week - is infinitely more than nothing! For most people, diligent, focused training twice a week will allow you to make consistent progress. And for a lot of folks, that’s what you can manage with everything else going on in your life. Personally, I find 3x a week to be the sweet spot. Not only are you training more, but you have smaller gaps between training sessions. We do need to recover, but not for so long that you start forgetting things. I would say if you’re training one day a week, see if you can get to two. If you’re training two days a week, see if you can get to three. Past that, I don’t think it’s worth pushing yourself. Train four or five days a week if you enjoy it and your body holds up, but not out of a sense of obligation. And once again, the most important consideration is that you’re doing SOMETHING. If you’re at 2x a week right now, and that’s what fits your schedule, your body, and your life, then KEEP DOING EXACTLY THAT. Training frequency isn’t a character issues, it’s a goals and life balance issue. Find what fits you, stay consistent, and enjoy your time on the mat.
