I probably read this comic 25 years ago, and the punchline has stuck with me ever since. Krav Maga is, at its core, about problem solving. You could argue that life is about problem solving, but that subject is outside the scope of my expertise. One quality that makes Krav Maga so brilliant is the focus on identifying the specific danger we need to solve. This quality is especially apparent in our weapon defenses. If someone is attacking you with a knife, the problem isn’t the existence of a knife, or even the fact that someone is holding a knife. The problem is the attacker. Of course we will block and neutralize the knife as best we can, but we fight the problem, which is the attacker. After all, if they’re incapacitated, they’re much less likely to stab you. This focus extends to the overall structure of the system itself. The problem Krav Maga is solving isn’t, “I need to be really good at fighting so I can beat everybody up.” The problem is, “In an uncertain world, I might be affected by random and unpredictable violence, and I need to be as prepared as possible with the time and training resources I have.”
