You're Solving The Wrong Problem Part 3: Training vs. Recovery

Let’s look at one more “Wrong Problem:” Training vs. Recovery.

Many times in your training you’ll hit a plateau. That could be in conditioning, in technique, in learning the curriculum, and even in your desire to train. For a lot of people, the solution to this problem is MOAR TRAINING. If you feel that your conditioning is slipping, train harder. If you feel you’re forgetting techniques, take more classes. If you’re having trouble sleeping, tire yourself out more. The solution is always more

And sometimes that IS the solution. If you’re adequately recovering, fueling yourself with high quality nutrition, and enthusiastic about training, and short-term, intense push can be just the thing. It’s far more likely though, that you don’t need more training, you need more recovery.

One of the few quotes I’ll give myself credit for is: You don’t get stronger by training; you get stronger by recovering from training.

Recovery comes in a lot of forms, but at their core, it’s always rest. There’s an excellent book calledGood to Go that you can read if you want to go deep into it, but it’s a good start to just acknowledge and accept that you have to recover from working out. You need short term recovery from individual classes, and long-term recovery from the extended weeks and months of training.

So as with all things in Krav, ask yourself, “What’s really the issue here?” We have limited time and energy, we can’t afford to spend it solving the wrong problem.
