Most injuries are very easy to train around, at least on paper. Two rules: 1: If a move hurts, don’t do it! 2: If a body part hurts, don’t use it! Admittedly, easier said than done, but if you wanted easy you wouldn’t have started Krav Maga in the first place. I do find that many people will get a fairly minor injury - let’s say a sprained wrist - and think they can’t train any more. Not because they’re wimps, but because they honestly think they aren’t allowed or qualified to train if they’re not fully healthy. Nothing could be further from the truth! Krav Maga is about adapting, and using the tools you have to face the situation at hand. If there’s a will there’s a way. Let’s look at one example: Hurting your ankle. It’s not uncommon to hurt your ankle, especially on the dominant side which is doing a lot of the work and taking a lot of the strain. Many times, simply putting on an ankle brace and switching your stance will be enough to mitigate the stress on that ankle, so you can keep training as it recovers. Will you still have to be cautious, and avoid certain moves and exercises? Yes, almost certainly. But you’re still training, getting better, and getting stronger. In this specific scenario you’re also learning to fight from your opposite stance, which is a valuable skill that becomes more important the higher you get in Krav. So hurting your ankle could derail your training, or it could be the chance for you to get a head start on new abilities. As long as you aren’t debilitated, you consult with your coaches, and train with caution, it’s just a different approach towards the same goals you are always pursuing.
